Cedar Bundle

A palm-sized bundle of cedar boughs, wrapped tight with cotton thread. Cedar has long been burned to clear a space and invite good things in, and its smoke smells of a forest after rain. Small enough for a pocket, a car or a gift bag, so it is an easy first bundle or a thoughtful thank-you.

• Dried cedar boughs, hand-wrapped with cotton thread
• About 4 in (10 cm) long
• Photo shows a typical bundle; yours will vary in size, shape and colour
• To smudge, light the tip, let the flame settle, then gently blow it out so the cedar smoulders. Hold a shell or fireproof dish beneath it, and press the tip into sand or the shell to put it out completely.
